62mas - Hand Painted Great Wave of Kanagawa (1 of 1)

This was a special project of mine that I had in mind for sometime. This took many hours to complete. As you can see in the photos, I started by hand painting the dial. The scene is from the famous Japanese scene the "Great Wave of Kanagawa" and this was my take on it. Usually it is represented in a very traditional Japanese style, I however wanted to try something different, using Japanese blue indigo, and more emphasis on depth of colour and shading. For the Hour markers, I had to extract them from 2 donor dials that came from 1970's Seiko LM watches. Being over 50 years old, they were in rough shape, but I loved their contours, so I decided to sand, polish, gold plate them, and finally to mirror polish. This took a very long time. The indices were extremely sensitive, any wrong move would leave a hairline scratch onto the mirror finish. Positioning and attaching the markers also required unbelievable care, for both the sake of accuracy and preserving them. The custom dial was then placed in a 62mas Stainless case, with a gold bezel and crown. The bezel insert is glass and lumed, so is the Kanji chapter ring. I couldn't bring myself to use a 4R series Seiko movement, and I opted for a 6R15 with a swapped rotor engraved with the Seigaiha pattern.
